These individuals are involved in a wide range of activities, including coaching, running clubs and fundraising. Quite simply, without volunteers, football in Scotland would not survive.

The Scottish FA (SFA), under the auspices of the Youth Action Plan, have implemented a five-point Strategy to address the recruitment, retention and recognition of volunteers.

The Five Objectives of the Volunteer Strategy

Objective 1:
Form new and effective partnerships with a wide range of organisations to enhance the recruitment and retention of volunteers.

Objective 2:
Football will seek to recruit more younger volunteers (16 to 25 year olds); more retired and semi-retired volunteers (50+) and more female volunteers. This objective is specifically aimed at new volunteers.

Objective 3:
Address the retention of current volunteers by implementing a series of support opportunities on how to run and develop a club or team. In addition, a coach support network and a coach-mentoring programme will be implemented to specifically support coaches.

Objective 4:
Define and promote best practice with regard to the recruitment, management and development of volunteers in football in Scotland.

Objective 5:
Establish national and regional volunteer recognition
